Stepping Back in time

The Globe Inn dates back to the Georgian period, originally a private house. First noted being an inn in 1873 with Walter Lee as the landlord. He took advantage of the railway trade, as the train station is located directly opposite.

The Looe train station was a goods line from 1860 and then a passenger line from 1879. There would have been busy days when the cattle market was in operation next to the station, roughly 1910 to 1950s.

Previous known landlords from the early 20th century were Alfred Cook noted on the 1911 census, Mary Williams & husband in 1927, Mary Williams now a widow in 1939 resided with her sister until 1943 when she died.

During WW2 there was a rumour involving Mary Williams. Enemy aircraft were looking for Frank Curtis’ Boatyard on West Looe river, but unable to find it dropped their incendiary bombs in the area of the Barbican and Sunrising House with one bomb reputably falling on The Globe. The landlady at the time was extremely annoyed and apparently wrote to Hitler asking for damages for the loss of her fur coat.

We can’t be sure how true this story is but it raises a smile!
